Final Blog for SCED

Well it has definitely been a long semester, but as it draws to an end I have to say that I have gotten a lot out of this class. Starting this class I didn't think that it would have anything to do with my future physical education class. That changed, however, as I opened my mind and actually listened. I learned a lot about how I could make my physical education classroom more educational and not all physical.
I want my students to not only be in great shape and learn to love being healthy, but I also want them to expand their knowledge on the subject.

I may have to use a lot of these as out of class assignments or as extra credit seeing as during class they will be running, sweating, and just loving life. I will be able to incorporate critical literacy by having my class think about the reasons for doing what we are doing in class that day. If they ask me a question about it, I can try stating something that will help them think deeper about the subject.

I would love to incorporate reading and writing into my physical education class. I would be able to use before, during, and after by providing an introductory activity to grab their attention. I would then have them do a reading or writing assignment outside of class, and then I could have them present before we do another activity dealing with the topic they did the assignment on. For example: I could have them practice some basketball, then have them go to a basketball game and observe the techniques used, and then have them come back and tell everyone what they saw and then we could have them play a basketball and try to use what they have learned and observed.

For an extra credit assignment, I could have the students put together a presentation either through powerpoint or through prezi about the activities that we will be doing in class. They could chose to present it on a laptop hooked up to a tv before class or I could just look at it and grade it.  I will also use digital literacy for my classes by being able to show youtube videos of the activites that we will be doing, and also for demonstrations.

As far as teaching academically, linguistically, and culturally diverse learners, I also would throw students with disabilities in there. I will have more challenges with disabilities than with the other differences. The students with disabilities will need to be included as much as possible. I will need to adjust my lesson plans so that they will be able to participate and feel welcome. I could have them be a ref when they can't actually do the activity or they could also keep score. I will definitely have to encourage the other students to help them. This will also work with students who speak mainly other languages besides English. I will use more demonstrations then verbal instructions.  I will also try to incorporate other cultures into my lessons sometimes.

My students will be able to access many different kinds of texts. There will be the Internet, magazines, and books. I will provide them with magazines that are very educational for them to look at while they are waiting for the bell to ring after getting changed.

Those are just a few of the ideas that I got from this semester. I will use even more ideas if I ever teach my minor of Health, but I really want to teach physical education. I thought it would be smart if I tried to incorporate what I have learned to what I will hopefully teach one day.

Self-Selected Project

I chose to do the digital text project.  I have recently come across Prezi, an online educational site that helps you prepare presentations. It is a lot like powerpoint, but more fun in my opinion. It takes a whole new spin on what a computer presentation could look like. Prezi lets you insert photos, youtube videos, and any other graphic someone might like to use. It also does graphic organizers to help you get your point across in an exciting way. The only problem I see with this program is that it is a little hard to grasp at first. I would love to have students use this when they are asked to present information on a topic, but I would have to show them how it works first. I can't just assume that they would be able to figure it all out on their own. I would need to have instructional videos or just worksheets that they could access so they could be successful in this project.

I could have them use this site to simply do a graphic organizer so I could see what they know about a topic. For instance with my minor of Health, I might have my students do an organizer about the digestive system. I could have them all do this on the Prezi site. The down fall of this, however, is that I would need to have the computer lab, library, or other means so all students would be able to participate. Students that do not have a computer at home would have to go to the library or something to do this project. For a presentation though, the students would have to find a way to get to a computer. With access to the library they would all be able to do this and make a great presentation. I would grade this project on if they got all of the information covered about the assignment. Whatever the topic may be, The students could organize all of their thoughts on this site in an enjoyable manner.

I could even use this in Physical Education for an extra credit project. They could choose a sport or skill and set up a presentation about the topic. They, of course, would have to give all the details about it, but I think that they could handle it.

I did a sample presentation about Stress. The following URL will take you there and hopefully show you how fun and different this site is. I'm excited to try this out one day when I have my students give presentations.

Here you go!   http://prezi.com/c0hgtmdoyh9w/stress/

SCED Blog Post 5

I have a ton of digital literacy in my  life. In the last week I have been on my iPhone, computers, playstations, and the tv for hours! Facebook is a pretty consistent part of my day. I know that sounds pathetic, but that is how I interact with my friends that don't live anywhere near me. I listen to music all the time on my phone. I am constantly emailing family members and watching tv shows online. Don't get me wrong I don't just screw around all day with the technology I use. I do get my homework done, hence this blog lol.

I know that the younger generations will be just as invovled if not more in the technology world than I am.  I will definitely have to find a way to encourage my students to use the ditigal technoloy for more school oriented uses. I would have the students use youtube to find instructional videos for sports that they would need to know how to play or to teach to the class. I could also have them use blogs and facebook for school purposes to communicate with eachother and to demonstrate things and also just to write since I will be teaching Physical Education.

I know I will use youtube videos to help demonstrate things that I want my students to do or to see. I will also use computers to make worksheets and handouts for the students. If I have students use technology in ways that they don't understand I will make sure and have detailed instructions and demonstrations to help them accomplish their tasks successfully.

Technology will always be apart of our lives. It will continue to grow and develop forever. So I will have to figure out a way to incorporate it into my teaching.

INST 4015 MPEG streamclip Assignment

I chose to do this clip of a Kindergarten class doing the Cha Cha. I would use this as an example for my class I would be teaching the dance to. These kids are so cute and really try to do the dance!

SCED Blog Post 4

I have to admit that I am not a writer. As you can tell from my blogs I don't know how to express myself in words as well as I can in drawings or Pictures. Even if my drawings or pictures don't say a lot they do say a lot about me. I love to draw and take pictures. I'll post some of my drawings I have done recently for fun. The only types of writing that I do for fun now is facebook (HA), emails to my brother, and I do occasionally write in a journal I have. I think it is important to document somethings.

I didn't have a whole lot of writing assignments in school that I liked. I hated being forced to write. I was never the best speller. The only time I was ok with writing a paper was when I got to choose what my topic was.

I don't know how much I will have my students write in my physical education classes. They definitely won't be papers. It will be more of a fitness plan or possible a journal. Something they can get their thoughts out on paper so they can read them in the future.

So like I promised....Here are some of the drawings I've done just messing around.
Monsters Inc.

Some of my old friends call me froggy. They said I jumped like a frog when I shot the ball during basketball.

This is one of my favorites...I'll have a monkey one day! ;)

I like drawing fairies for some reason. Maybe I would really like to fly or something.

I love watching eagles soar. They are so peaceful and beautiful.

Dragons are pretty cool. I can't just draw pretty pictures right?! lol

I will always be an Aggie. I am very proud of that and always will be.

INST 4015 - Picasa Assignment

I love supporting my brother as he plays basketball at Utah State! I love spray painting shirts and being as school spirited as possible!

My whole family loves riding motorcycles! It is a fun way for my family to spend time together and to bond. Yes I have crashed a few times, but hey nothing a few stitches can't fix right?!

My mother and I have fun just acting crazy! She is a woman that I will be lucky to be like when I grow up.

Blog 3 for SCED

I don't believe that I am a very good reader. I have read all of my life, but it was always a struggle for me. Reading was never enjoyable. I always thought of it as a chore with school. I absolutely hated AR and taking the tests. The only times I enjoyed reading was when I got to do it on my own. I got to choose what book I wanted to read and when I wanted to read them. I didn't have a date that I needed to have the book finished by and I definitely didn't need to take a test on it or write a paper about it. My favorite types of books to read on my own free time were the mystery books. I loved the plots that kept me guessing until the very end.

Within my discipline I don't think my students will be reading that much. I can't ever remember opening a book for my Physical Education classes when I was younger. I don't think that you should have to read in a class that is meant to keep you active. I will try, however, to incorporate it in some way. If it is a back up plan for when the weather doesn't corporate with the schedule that I have set up. I can always have a bunch of Physical Education magazines or something laying around the office so on those crappy days, I can have the students take a look at them and find something interesting that they can share with the class. I wouldn't have them write a paper or anything about it unless I included it as extra credit because I don't want my students to hate writing because they are forced to do it. I would rather have them enjoy what they are reading, which will make them think highly of reading and of themselves.
