I want my students to not only be in great shape and learn to love being healthy, but I also want them to expand their knowledge on the subject.
I may have to use a lot of these as out of class assignments or as extra credit seeing as during class they will be running, sweating, and just loving life. I will be able to incorporate critical literacy by having my class think about the reasons for doing what we are doing in class that day. If they ask me a question about it, I can try stating something that will help them think deeper about the subject.
I would love to incorporate reading and writing into my physical education class. I would be able to use before, during, and after by providing an introductory activity to grab their attention. I would then have them do a reading or writing assignment outside of class, and then I could have them present before we do another activity dealing with the topic they did the assignment on. For example: I could have them practice some basketball, then have them go to a basketball game and observe the techniques used, and then have them come back and tell everyone what they saw and then we could have them play a basketball and try to use what they have learned and observed.
For an extra credit assignment, I could have the students put together a presentation either through powerpoint or through prezi about the activities that we will be doing in class. They could chose to present it on a laptop hooked up to a tv before class or I could just look at it and grade it. I will also use digital literacy for my classes by being able to show youtube videos of the activites that we will be doing, and also for demonstrations.
As far as teaching academically, linguistically, and culturally diverse learners, I also would throw students with disabilities in there. I will have more challenges with disabilities than with the other differences. The students with disabilities will need to be included as much as possible. I will need to adjust my lesson plans so that they will be able to participate and feel welcome. I could have them be a ref when they can't actually do the activity or they could also keep score. I will definitely have to encourage the other students to help them. This will also work with students who speak mainly other languages besides English. I will use more demonstrations then verbal instructions. I will also try to incorporate other cultures into my lessons sometimes.
My students will be able to access many different kinds of texts. There will be the Internet, magazines, and books. I will provide them with magazines that are very educational for them to look at while they are waiting for the bell to ring after getting changed.
Those are just a few of the ideas that I got from this semester. I will use even more ideas if I ever teach my minor of Health, but I really want to teach physical education. I thought it would be smart if I tried to incorporate what I have learned to what I will hopefully teach one day.
